San José del Cabo

Founded in 1730, San José del Cabo is now one of the fastest-growing cities on the Mexican Pacific coast and the municipal capital of Los Cabos. It has a remarkable history that shapes its concept as a cultural city, and its natural surroundings are among the most beautiful on the peninsula: beautiful white sand beaches and the Estero Josefino, an oasis that is home to many species and migratory birds.

San José del Cabo is perfect for exploring through outdoor walks that surprise you with nature, appreciating its colonial buildings, and experiencing the atmosphere of art and culture by visiting its galleries in the Historic Center.

Since its founding on April 8, 1730, the mission has overcome battles, epidemics, and even an invasion during the war with the United States. Nevertheless, it managed to consolidate itself with an extraordinarily progressive town at the end of the 19th century.

At that time, Los Cabos experienced its first extraordinary period of economic wealth generated by agriculture. San José del Cabo and its surroundings were known for sugarcane cultivation and brown sugar production, an activity that shaped the town of Josefino, leading to the construction of its colonial buildings, particularly in the downtown area.

Without a doubt, the most representative building of the period is the town hall and its clock tower. This building has been the seat of local government since its construction in the late 19th century, a place steeped in history where society has been shaped over time.

Opposite the municipal palace are two of the most emblematic buildings from the golden age. They were formerly part of a store called "La Voz del Sur" (The Voice of the South), which sold all kinds of products and exported piloncillo, meat, and vegetables to Mexico City through the González Canseco brothers' company. This company was a pioneer in Mexico in the sale of cars, having a Ford dealership at the beginning of the 20th century. This was extraordinary for the size of the town and its isolation from the rest of the country.

Another must-see site is the Church of Our Lord Saint Joseph, although its current location is not the original site from 1730. It retained its missionary style until 1917, when a powerful hurricane destroyed it. Construction of the new church began some time later and took decades to complete. One of the attractions of this building is the artistic mosaic on its facade, which depicts the martyrdom of parish priest Nicolás Tamaral during the Pericú Indian rebellion in 1734, one of the most interesting episodes in the history of Los Cabos.

Half a block from the church is Álvaro Obregón Street, also known as the Art District, where art exhibitions and restaurants are located in restored old houses. Every week there are activities and exhibitions such as the traditional Art Walk, which is a great festival full of color, flavor, and music where galleries and restaurants are the gracious hosts who invite visitors to enjoy drinks and snacks.

One of the outstanding features of this beautiful city is its environment, with sunrises that touch the soul. Feeling the connection with the earth through your bare feet on the sand, listening to the striking ebb and flow of the sea, and watching the majestic sunrise on the clear horizon will be an immersive and inspiring experience.

The beach area next to the Josefino Estuary is a tribute to nature. Migratory birds, endemic and aquatic species form a high-resolution visual spectacle, perfect for capturing with a camera. It is a magnificent space for taking photographs and videos.

An alternative activity is shore fishing, which can be done at La Bocana Beach. Whether you are an expert or an amateur, fun is guaranteed due to the abundance of species, especially during the summer. It is an excellent opportunity to cast your line.

San José del Cabo is a fascinating tourist destination due to its concept based on history, culture, and art, with one of the most beautiful natural environments on the peninsula. An ideal place to visit on your next vacation.
