Proposal to declare the Historic Center of San José del Cabo a World Heritage Site

During the ceremony commemorating the 295th anniversary of San José del Cabo, the mayor announced that the historic center could be nominated to UNESCO.

Los Cabos, Baja California Sur. – The installation of the public authorities of the state of Baja California Sur is taking place as part of the ceremony commemorating the 295th anniversary of the founding of the Mission of San José del Cabo, held in Antonio Mijares Square.

During the event, Mayor Christian Agúndez Gómez asked the State Congress to consider that the only hero of San José del Cabo, Mauricio Castro Cota, who, despite not being a soldier, was the leader of the movement against the American invasion, could occupy a space within the Rotunda of Illustrious Men.

Agúndez highlighted that Los Cabos has positioned itself globally, with modern infrastructure, more efficient public services, and higher-quality education, allowing new generations to move forward with hope and determination.

"We celebrate a day of profound historical and emotional significance for the community, marking 296 years since the founding of the Mission of San José del Cabo, an event that marked the birth of our identity as a people, while also paying tribute to the 45th anniversary of the creation of the Los Cabos City Council."

"An institution that has been key in the process of transformation, development, and organization of this privileged location," said Christian Agúndez, mayor of Los Cabos.

The municipal president added that to this day, Los Cabos continues to build unity, family, work, and a deep connection to the land, and that in these three centuries, the region has grown.

"We have transformed our daily lives, but we have never lost our sense of belonging or the roots that bind us to our land, our history, and our culture. It has been a story of teamwork, vision, and sacrifice on the part of all the inhabitants who, from different corners of the region, have made efforts to improve the quality of life," said the mayor of Los Cabos.

For his part, the state governor, Victor Manuel Castro Cosio, recalled that it was on April 8, 1730, when Jesuit missionary Nicolas Tamaral founded San Jose del Cabo near the estuary, next to the beach. However, for health reasons, the mission was moved to the place we now know as the historic heart of the municipal capital of Los Cabos.

"That is why I am committed to seeking the declaration of the historic center of San José del Cabo as a World Heritage Site by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO)," he announced.

Finally, he stated that development and investment are welcome, but always with respect for sustainability, the environment, and the history of this city, which, 295 years after its founding, is one of the most important in the country.
